Robert (Bob) Sommerville (b.1946) is an Australian graphic designer and artist living and working in the historic arts and port city of Fremantle, Western Australia.
“My works are a culmination of many years of art, graphic design, drafting, cartography. I have also worked in traditional media including inks, water colours, oils and acrylics over the past forty years.
I have experimented for a number of years with a technique to create high quality investment art in new media. Developments in creative processes, imaging techniques, inks, colours and materials enable today’s artists to produce works to the highest quality and permanence standards, comparable with traditional media.
My inspiration in these works is in shape and form I experience everyday in many aspects of nature, ranging from micrographs, images, and flora to horizon shapes, ocean and river movement etc. .There is strong influence in music and the shapes and colours that music means to me. I set about creating a work with reference to found natural objects, photography, line drawings - often a composite. I seek visual clues of something within, changing line and form to express the dynamic that I feel. I may find line and form in a very small abstract part of a drawing or image and break that down further in minute detail but greatly enlarge and develop it in form and expression to a practical visual scale. The majority of the works are created to size in excess of 800mm square.
The interpretation of my work is left entirely to the viewer - nature only presents an image of itself to us - we can only interpret what we see. The existence of the “natural” may entirely differ from perception or purpose. For this reason few of my works (in any medium) are titled. I prefer to leave that to you, the purchaser or admirer to choose to be involved or not in the creative process by entitling your work as you may interpret”.
